FG Reacts As Oil Marketers Demand Increase Of Petrol Price To N165

Petrol Filling Station

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reacted to pressure mounted by the marketers of petroleum product for an upward review in the pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit - petrol.
According to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, and the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Dr. Maikanti Baru, there was no immediate plan to increase the pump price of petrol.

When approached by newsmen to speak on the planned increase in petrol price, Baru, who declined to speak at length, said: “There is nothing like that.”
Also, Kachikwu, when approached for comment, revealed that there was no memo before the Federal Government asking for a review of the price.
The minister’s respond came against the backdrop of reports by some marketers that Nigerians should prepare for another increase in petrol prices due to the continued scarcity of foreign exchange to finance the importation of the product.
The oil marketers had last month griped that the free fall of the naira against the dollar had made it unprofitable for them to import petrol and sell at the current rate of N145 per litre.
A source, who seems to be familiar to the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, disclosed that N165 is the pump price that will cover the cost of forex required for fuel importation.
Another source – official of one of the marketers’ associations – said,
“Let the government do the needful. We have already said it before that the price is not sustainable. When they fixed that price, dollar was N280 – N285; now the dollar is almost N400 and they want us to bring in products and sell at N145. It is not possible.
“But right now, most of us are getting the product from the NNPC; that is why you still see that there is product everywhere. It is an indirect case of subsidy. It means the government is subsidising it through the NNPC and we are buying at local price. Had it been that we were the ones that sourced the foreign exchange, we can’t sell it at N145.”
The development is coming barely four months after the government increased petrol prices from N86 and N86.5 per litre to between N135 and N145 per litre.

Muslim Group Rejects New NYSC Date For Orientation Due To Ramadan

The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, have released a statement rejecting the June 13th date fixed for the NYSC Batch A (Stream II) orientation course, arguing that the Muslim graduates expected to participate in the orientation will be fasting as the date clashes with their Ramadan fasting. The group argues that it would be very strenuous for Muslims to be fasting and also participate in the challenges task set for them during their orientation camp.

The statement reads in part
“It is illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional for NYSC to hold camp at a time when its Muslim members will be deprived of their freedom of worship and the liberty to practice their creed without fear. This planned camp is exclusive, discriminatory and parochial. We do not want to believe that the shift was deliberately planned to coincide with the Ramadan season with a view to excluding prospective Muslim corpers. MURIC is not trying to indulge Muslim youths. Fasting is no joke and it certainly cannot be combined with the physical challenges which characterize the NYSC camp.
Firstly, morning drills in NYSC camps are known to be rigorous and the soldiers in charge will not take excuses. Dehydration sets in later in the day particularly in the hotter regions of Nigeria.
Secondly, adequate sahuur (early morning meal taken approximately between 4 am and 5.15 am) cannot be guaranteed in the NYSC camp. Neither can the futuur (meal taken at sunset to break fast ) be timely as camp schedules are bound to ignore and subsume this very important period.
Thirdly, attending orientation camp and partaking in the energy-sapping activities on empty stomach is an indubitable invitation to health crisis. NYSC may therefore be inviting Muslim corpers to step on landmines in the planned orientation camp if it holds as presently scheduled.
There is more to Ramadan than ordinary fasting. That is on the surface. The whole month of Ramadan is a period of spiritual dedication. There are so many other spiritual exercises in which Muslims engage, the tafsiir (exegesis of the Qur’an) session, the taraawih (late evening supererogatory prayers) and nawaafil (night supererogatory prayers). Only the deep can call to the deep. All these cannot be possible in the NYSC camp.”the statement read

Open Letter To FG – Scrap NYSC

I have read online about the purported postponement of the NYSC. I have decided to compile several reasons why the NYSC should be scrapped.
I don’t want this to come across to you as a political propaganda, I am neither for APC nor PDP I only represent myself in this view and a few others who will see reason with this. I fully represent NIGERIA.
Dear Mr President, DG NYSC and Mr Senate president,
I write to you with great respect because its not easy to be a leader and I humbly present my case that the NYSC scheme should either be scrapped or redefined to fit into the future of this great nation. Permit me to start with the reasons why I think the scheme be scrapped or amended after which I will talk about probable amendments that could be implemented.
WHY THE NYSC SCHEME SHOULD BE SCRAPPED/AMENDED.
1. The scheme was created to help the nation heal quickly from the effects of the Civil war: Now the civil war is over and we should be focused on avoiding another war- an intra personal war. This is a war that a person fights with himself otherwise known as Confusion.
How do you expect someone who studied Biochemistry to teach intergtated science effectively? First of, the graduate studied Biochemistry and not Biochemistry education! The former is practical and field related while the latter has to do with class activities)
2. Too much money is expended on this scheme and there are no visible results: I personally believe that the money spent on the NYSC scheme will be enough to create jobs for these graduates. Its not yielding results because after the 1-year mandatory service most of the graduates are left jobless and without savings to start up a business of their own – they don’t have savings not because they don’t want to but because the cost of ‘survival’ is high. NOTE that I used ‘cost of survival’ and not ‘cost of living’ that’s simply because the latter is not affordable!
3. Looks Like A Use-and-dump Scheme: After the one year compulsory service I said earlier that the graduates end up as jobless people. This is because there is NO system, not to talk of having an organized one. The companies (most times schools) that the corpers are posted to milk them of every dime the FG is paying (a paltry 19,800 most of which will be spent on transport). These people will still rent an apartment if they are so unlucky to be posted to a state where they know no one (80% of youth corp members fall in this category).
4. No relevant experience is gained in most cases: I need not to talk too much about this but I’ll say a little.
Now, of what relevance is the teaching experience a Banking and Finance graduate gets from teaching a primary school student? He/she will be dealing with adults on the job after NYSC, he/she can’t probably use whatever experience gotten. Total Waste Of Time You’d Permit Me To Say!!!
There are lots of reasons I believe the scheme should be scrapped or amended but I’ll leave the rest to the readers of this letter.
I have included the Senate president as recipient of this letter because I know nothing can be done except through the senate. The NYSC was brought in through an ACT, that act has to be amended by the legislative arm of government.
Before I go ahead to the possible solutions, I know some big guns will not agree that the scheme be scrapped because of what they gain from the system, a not-well-organised system.
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
1. Scrap the whole scheme and use the funds put into the program to create jobs.
2. Let each person serve in their respective fields: Let the man who studied engineering serve with Julius Berger or ministry of works and let the man who studied Agriculture serve on a government farm and let them have the option of being fully employed after their service year.
3. Trainings: Should the scheme be scrapped, the government should make available free training centers for fresh graduates.
4. Soft loans: These loans should be given out to fresh graduates who wish to start up businesses without collecting collateral. There should be strict rules guiding the monitoring and implementation, defaulters should be punished.
These loans should be treated as a contract between the FG and the individual, the FG is contracting the young graduate to start a business and create jobs. That’s what happens when there are more businesses, more jobs are available.
I wish I could write more but I’m typing this from my phone, permit me to stop here.
I am Adebusoye Ademola and I think the NYSC should be scrapped or amended.
Nigerians what do you think about this?
Drop your comments.

Nigerians React To The New JAMB Cut-off Mark – See What They Are Saying

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, on June 2 announced that the Post-UTME screening which is usually organised by tertiary institutions for candidates who passed the JAMB cut-off will now be scrapped.
He also added that the the new JAMB cut-off mark will be fixed at 180 for all tertiary institutions except Unilag, UI and OAU whose scores will remain at 200.
According to him, it is not necessary for universities to organise additional entrance exams and the JAMB exam is a sufficient screening process.
Nigerians reacted to this new development and some thought JAMB itself should be scrapped.
Tweet1

Because Nigerian institutions should be independently in charge of entrance exams.
Tweet2
But let’s also not forget why the Post-UTME exams were organised in the first place.
Tweet3
Although some universities have taken advantage of the post UTME screening.
Tweet4
Lowering standards and cancelling the screening will not improve the already failing education sector in the country.
Tweet5
Because the screening was set in place because of the infamous JAMB “special centers” and malpractice scams.
Tweet6
The Ministry of Education needs to implement useful policies that will improve the standard of Nigerian universities.

Women Protest Unclad In Nkwegu, Ebonyi

There was pandemonium at Nkwegu community near Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi state as over 200 women from Afikpo South Council area of Ebonyi state protested Unclad over the alleged continued detention of the President General of the community, Ndubuisi Ekumankama. He was detained by the police for allegedly demolishing a widow’s house in Amangwu Edda community.

The women, who had planned to storm the Government House in protest were intercepted by policemen at the Nkwegu, near military cantonment when they resisted the first team of policemen who could not withstand the sight of the rampaging Unclad women.

Daily Sun gathered that the women protested without wearing anything at the upper parts of their body which threw many into confusion, including the policemen.

However, it took the intervention of the Police Commissioner, CP Peace Ibekwe Abdallah who immediately mobilised another team of policewomen led by the Officer in charge of Criminal Investigation Department, who led other policewomen to the scene.

Speaking to our reporter on the incident, the Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), ASP George Okafor, described the actions of the protesting Unclad women as shameful and desecration of Igbo culture and norms.

Mr. Okafor said the women had planned the protest last week but were advised to follow the legal way of registering their complaints since the suspect and the President General of the Community who was arrested by the police in connection to the demolition of the widow’s house has been charged to court.

“Last week, a group of women numbering about 20 stormed the state headquarters to protest over the arrest and detention of a suspect who was being held for demolishing a widow’s house in Amangwu-Edda. After we spoke to them, they even saw the suspect and he spoke to them which showed that he is alive. They went back and today again, we got information that the same women had gone and mobilised over 200 other women to storm the government house to protest and we also got information that they were coming into the town Unclad so we tried to halt them from gaining entrance into the city.

“Our men who earlier got to the scene were repelled because of the sight of the unclothedness of these women and we had to mobilise our police women led by woman ACP in charge of CID. They went there as women, who understood each other. And they had more access to them unlike the men who were being careful because these women were Unclad.

Their actions were unfortunate and shameful. They have desecrated the Igbo culture by protesting Unclad over a politically motivated issue. If there were reasons to protest Unclad, these women should have known that it must be a serious issue.”
