There was a free for all shootout on Odunfa Street, off Kano Street, in the Ebute Meta area of Lagos on Monday night after suspected cultists engaged in a bloody clash which resulted in at least two deaths.
Witnesses said that the trouble started at about 21:00 on Monday when armed men stormed the street and started shooting at some area boys drinking at a beer parlour.
At least two deaths have been confirmed however there are reports of up to six deaths.
“The boys were caught unaware, hence, they could not defend themselves. It’s was terrible, even the police could not help us. It was after they had gone that the police came and started arresting people up and down.”
One witness said that the fight took place to decide who controls the various parks in Ebute Meta and their lucrative extortion rackets.
“They took advantage of the situation and robbed everyone within the area. It was horrible, they also came in the morning and killed another person.”
A robbery victim said he lost his laptop, phones and money after he was robbed at gun point after the fight.
“I was returning from work when they attacked me. I was forced to lie down on the floor while they took my laptop and everything found with me. I thank God for my life.”
Confirming the incident, the state police command spokesman Joe Offor, said it was a case of fighting among cultists that turned bloody.
“They fought among themselves on Monday night and one of them died. They also came back yesterday morning and another person was killed.
Meanwhile five persons have been arrested and the police are on the lookout for the leader of one of the gangs who has been identified as Sunday Terror.
According to reports, Terror managed to escape through the water ways.
“Normalcy have been restored in the area and police men are on ground to counter any attempt to cause trouble,” Offor said.
